What is PAT testing?
PAT testing — or Portable Appliance Testing — is a combination of visual inspection and electrical testing used to assess whether portable electrical equipment is safe to use.
Depending on the type of equipment, testing can identify issues such as damaged cables, faulty insulation, earth faults and other electrical problems that may present a risk to users.
Typical items we test include:
- Extension leads and portable distribution equipment
- Kettles, microwaves and other kitchen appliances
- Computers, monitors and office equipment
- Power tools
- Lamps and lighting equipment
- Hairdryers and personal electrical equipment
- Photography and studio equipment
- Portable electrical equipment used in rental properties
- 240 V three-pin appliances
- 110 V building-site equipment
Every item is assessed according to its type and condition, using appropriate testing procedures.

What you receive
Following testing, you receive clear and useful records of the work carried out.
This includes:
- Pass/fail labels applied to tested appliances
- Clear test report for your records
- Identification of failed items
- Notification of any issues identified during testing
Where an appliance fails a test, I will explain the reason and advise you on the appropriate next step.
PAT testing prices
PAT testing costs depend on the number and type of appliances, their location and the testing requirements.
For larger testing jobs, my day rate allows as many appliances to be tested as can reasonably be completed during the booked day.
For smaller or larger-volume jobs, prices can start from £1.50 per appliance, depending on quantity.
If you’re unsure how many appliances you have, get in touch and I can discuss the most suitable option for your requirements.

Do you need to PAT test your appliances?
There isn’t a blanket legal requirement for every electrical appliance to be PAT tested at a particular interval.
However, employers, landlords and other responsible persons have duties to ensure that electrical equipment is properly maintained and safe to use. PAT testing can form an important part of an appropriate electrical equipment inspection and maintenance programme.
The right approach depends on the type of equipment, how and where it is being used, and the level of risk involved.
If you’re unsure what your business or property needs, I can help you establish a practical testing approach.
